Grenadiers shako of the 2nd Battalion of the 40th Line Infantry Regiment, model 1821, Restoration.
Cotton cloth. Top part with scarlet braid (width : 4 cm). Bottom part with leather bourdalou (width : 3 cm). Black oiled leather cap (diameter : 25 cm). Black leather peak ; oiled green leather lining (6.5 cm). Brass chin scales. Brass side bosses stamped with a fleur-de-lys. Stamped brass shako plate with the royal French coat of arms topped by a crown and surrounded with laurel leaves sprays, set on a base with number 40 cut out. Plate height : 14 cm ; width : 10.5 cm. White painted stamped metal cockade (diameter : 6.8 cm). Black oiled leather headband ; canvas lining. Contractor’s label glued under cap : ‘COLIN FILS : CHAPELIER FOURNISSEUR, de la Maison du Roi et de Châteaux Royaux, Rue de la Michaudière n°4 A PARIS’. Scarlet horsehair plume. Scarlet woollen pompom (height : 4.5 cm). Total plume height : 43 cm. Shako height without plume : 23.5 cm (forward) ; 20.5 cm (backward).
Very good condition (braid worn out), plume in quite good condition.
