ORDER OF PIUS IX IN THE COMMANDER WITH STAR ORDER, created in June 1847, 1939-1958. 30836R
Vermeil star, with eight points, azure enameled, interspersed with diamond-tipped palmettes, with a white enamel medallion in the center bearing the name of Pius IX "PIUS IX" in golden letters. Surrounding this medallion, a golden listel inscribed in blue letters; "VERTUTI ET MERITO". On the reverse of the medallion is the year "Anno MDCCCXLVII". The blue star is worn on a circle of golden rays.
Diameter 57.6 mm
Ribbon 47.5 mm wide, in dark blue moiré silk edged with two parallel red stripes, each 4.8 mm wide.
Plate featuring a vermeil star identical to the obverse, but with a diameter of 66.4 mm. Fastened with a hinged pin.
Case by the House of Tanfani and Bertarelli of Rome, in wood covered with a bright red faux leather coating, embossed with the gold coat of arms of Pope Pius XII who bestowed this decoration, framed with a gilded border. Interior in plush velvet, lid in satin, ivory.

Historical note:
Created on June 17, 1847, by a Bull of Pope Pius IX, to likely evoke the Order of the Knights of Pius, established in 1559 by Pope Pius IV. It is intended to reward distinguished actions, demonstrations of devotion to the Holy See, and services rendered in the Arts.
