Good condition, some damage, wood slightly worm-eaten at the back.

€1,500/€2,000
Provenance:
- Collection Georges A. Douglass
- Sotheby's New York Auction, January 12, 1996, lot 1316
Carved from poplar wood. Front face painted in blue-green with a white border, featuring a vegetable ornament and a fish (representing the dolphin of the Delfini?), topped with the inscription 1807 R.C.P. (for Regio Commissario Pisa?). In low light, relief decorative elements and the letters of a previous late 18th-century decoration motto can be seen. Two strong wooden handles nailed to the back. Slightly hollowed reverse for arm passage, marked with the initials A B C of a Pisan auditor.
Some gaps in the paint, wood slightly worm-eaten in places at the back.
95
Shield (targone) for the Gioco del Ponte, in the colors of the Delfini and Sant’Antonio squads, Mezzogiorno area.
Pisa (Italy), late 18th century (probably 1785), repainted in 1807
L. 100 cm – W. 22 cm
598 CH
€1,500/€2,000
Provenance:
- Collection Karsten Klingbeil (b.1925-2016), Kleinen Wannsee, Berlin (Germany) until 2011
- Bergé and Hermann Historica Auction, Brussels, December 13, 2011, lot 82
Carved from poplar wood. Front face painted with a blue and white chevron motif (colors of the Delfini squad at the end of the 18th century). It was repainted, likely for the 1807 edition, in the colors of the Sant’Antonio district (a running boar on a red background), but this layer is very incomplete. Wooden handle nailed to the back (the second one is missing). Slightly hollowed reverse for arm passage, marked with the crowned initials AVC, for Auditore Vicario Cercignani. A targone dated from the 1785 game edition, bearing the same auditor's mark, is preserved at the Pisa city museum. A copper collector's plate nailed to the handle bearing the number 0259.
Incomplete paint, one of the handles is missing.
