Cavalry armet
France, early 17th century
H. 30 cm – W. 21 cm
340 CHE
55,000/70,000 €
Cavalry armet, with an ovoid fluted skull extended by a neck blade, surmounted by a pointed crest pierced with several holes for a crest, with the missing top decoration. Remnants of a brass plume holder at the back. Chinstrap originally held to the skull on the sides by hinged attachments, broken and replaced by a hook on one side. Fixed neckplate at the front. Two-piece mizar with a very pronounced point, with the visor perforated with breathing holes arranged in a circle on both sides. Attachment and trim rivets with brass-covered heads. Very beautiful acid-engraved decoration composed of bands alternating sequences of weapon trophies on a dotted background and vegetal scrolls on a hatched background. The iron surface was originally entirely gilded, and the trophy bands alternated a background painted in red with another painted in black, creating a very colorful ensemble, particularly fashionable on French armors of the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Such a polychrome armor is, for example, preserved at the Army Museum in Paris (inv. 457 PO). Good condition, gilding and polychromy very worn, some accidents.
