Venetian-style ceremonial sallet, made of one piece of copper, covered with red fabric (now faded). The crest and edges are reinforced with gilded copper bands, complemented by openwork appliques riveted at the top and back of the helm, depicting stylized vegetal scrolls. A late example of these "celate da pompa alla veneziana," worn since the 15th century during festivities and ceremonies of the Venetian Republic. It actually replicates an Italian sallet model from the late Middle Ages. The red painted number inside the helmet (L.1876.2) corresponds to the loan made to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1919 by Bashford Dean (1867-1928). After his death, the sallet was returned to Mrs. Dean in 1929, then included in the auction "Collection formed by the late Bashford Dean, now belonging to the estate of the late Mrs. Bashford Dean and sold on behalf of the executors." (Parke-Bernet, New York, October 26, 1950, lot 58).
Good condition, discoloration and damages to the fabric, losses in the gilding.
