Lot no. 52 (of the sale)
Bourguignotte
Germany (possibly Augsburg), circa 1575
H. 30 – W. 20 cm
241 CH
25,000/35,000 €
Bourguignotte composed of a high-crested skull cap extended downwards by a neck guard and to the front by a short pointed visor. The cheek-pieces, each pierced with nine holes for hearing, are hinged. A corded motif adorns the trimmed edges and the top of the crest, pierced with a hole for a later crest. The rivets of the internal lining (now missing), whose heads were originally covered with a brass sheet, hold intricate brass washers. The top of the skull cap, the crest, and the borders are decorated with acid-etched, gilded and blackened engravings, with elements standing out against a stippled background. While the secondary bands feature vegetal scroll decoration, in the center on both sides of the crest is a dragon, framed by a combination of weapon trophies and musical instruments. The plume holder is missing.
Good condition, some damage on the skull cap at the back left, another defect on one side of the crest, gilding worn in places.
