Civil Sword
Mount by Gottfried Leygebe (Nuremberg or Berlin), blade signed Tomas Ayala (Toledo, Spain, or German imitation),
circa 1650-80.
L. 95 cm – W. 11.5 cm
Civil sword with a sculpted iron mount by Gottfried Leygebe. Quillon in the form of a small dog licking its paws.
Guard branch with the central part formed by the body of a lion standing on a cornucopia. At the crossguard, quillon and branch emerge from the mouths of marine creatures, on which stands a lion in the round-making steps. Twisted iron wire in-brace handle. Pommel made of another lion in-the-round in the same position. Guttered blade signed Tomas Ayala on both sides. Another mount by Leygebe quite similar, but without a guard branch, is preserved at the Deutsches Klingenmuseum in Solingen, Germany. The artist also incorporated the same lion on the pommel of a sword from the collections of the Walters Arts Museum in Baltimore (51.1387). Good condition, blade slightly pitted by oxidation.
