To ensure the defense of Provence against the Austrian General Mélas, who had gathered a strong column composed of the mobile national guards of the departments of Var and Bouches-du-Rhône, he led them to the camp of Saint-Laurent. This reinforcement arrived just in time on 15 May 1800 and was very effectively used in the defense of the Var bridgehead, attacked by Austrian troops and by the artillery of several English ships beached at the mouth of the river.
