BIOGRAPHY:
Étienne-Nicolas de Calon, born on October 3, 1726, in Grandvilliers (Oise), died on June 4, 1807, in Paris, was a brigade general of the French Revolution, cartographer, and politician.
As a geographer engineer since May 9, 1750, he was employed in the army of Germany on April 15, 1760, and then obtained the rank of engineer lieutenant in 1763. He was then sent to Saint-Domingue.
Employed in the mapping of the surroundings of Versailles in 1767, he was promoted to infantry captain in 1769. In 1777, Louis XVI entrusted him with mapping the coasts of the Ocean, and he was attached to the staff of the army of Brittany in 1778, obtaining the title of Knight of Saint-Louis on November 20, 1785.
Political Career:
In September 1791, Calon, then a member of the departmental council of Oise, was elected as a deputy of his department, the sixth out of twelve, to the Legislative National Assembly. He voted in favor of indictments of Bertrand de Moleville, Minister of the Navy, and the Marquis de Lafayette.
The French monarchy collapsed after the events of August 10, 1792. In September, Calon was reelected as a deputy of Oise, the second out of twelve, to the National Convention. He sat on the Mountain benches. During the trial of Louis XVI, he voted for the death penalty and rejected the appeal to the people and the stay of execution. He abstained from voting on the indictment of Jean-Paul Marat, justifying his vote: "I declare that given the oppression manifested in such an important circumstance, I do not cast my vote." He rejected the reinstatement of the Commission of Twelve.
