Mughal Khanjar (dagger), white nephrite jade hilt and scabbard set with precious stones in gold, tempered steel blade
decorated with gold, scabbard in wood covered with dark green velvet.
India, 18th century
L. 41 cm

60,000/80,000 €
The handle, medallion, and chape are carved from white nephrite jade set with rubies, emeralds, and diamonds in gold floral arrangements in golden Kundan. The handle is adorned with two unusual tail-shaped flowers that bloom upwards. One of the quillons is set with a table-cut diamond at the end, while the other quillon unfortunately is no longer set. Above the quillons, on both sides, are flame-shaped spirals mounted with rubies. The pommel of the chape is broken and missing at the end.
The dagger has a curved tempered steel blade with the base adorned with golden koftgari decorations. The wooden scabbard is covered with dark green velvet.
A related example was sold at Christie's, Maharajas & Mughal Magnificence, New York, June 19, 2019, lot 380.
