Mughal Khanjar (dagger), with guard and scabbard in nephrite jade set with gemstones, India, 18th century
Mughal Khanjar (dagger), with guard and scabbard in nephrite jade set with gemstones and a steel wootz blade,
later green velvet-covered wooden scabbard
India, 18th century
L. 39.5 cm
34 B
60,000/80,000 €
The guard, medallion, and chape are carved from nephrite jade with gemstones set in leaf and worked in
gilded kundan. The pommel of the guard features an unusual flower with three large leaves and six small buds blossoming
at the top; two of the large leaves are set with rock crystal with emerald points, a theme that continues throughout the
floral pattern; the stylized acanthus leaves at the base of the guard are multicolored. To cover a crack or flaw, a band
set with gemstones is just above the quillon block.
Straight blade in tempered steel with slight curvature at the base ending in a fleur-de-lis joining a raised midrib which
joins the reinforced tip. The wooden scabbard is covered in newer velvet and the dagger is housed in a modern box
lined with leather and velvet.
A related example was sold at Christie’s, Maharajas & Mughal Magnificence, New York, June 19, 2019, lot 380.
