Exhibition and publication:
- Howard Ricketts and Philippe Missillier, Splendor of Oriental Arms, Paris, 1988, p. 40-41, no. 51, ill.
Damascus steel sighted barrel, breech decorated with gold in the typical method of Trebizond arms, featuring a floral bouquet in a vase and a border of spirals. Gilded silver barrel rings with floral arches, the front of the stock entirely covered in gilded silver mounted with coral and adorned with relief floral scrolls along the barrel, the end mounted with corals and containing a steel ramrod. The muzzle decorated and gold-inlaid. The stock is covered in worn burgundy velvet held in place by leather straps fixed with silver rivets. A large piece of ivory butt adorned with a silver monogram A.A.A. topped with a crown, believed to belong to Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovitch (1850-1908), brother of Tsar Alexander III, an arts patron and, after his dismissal from the Russian navy, a resident in Paris, where he lived in a house on Avenue Gabriel. He died in the city in 1908.
A similar example can be found in the Hermitage collection (inv. no. B.O.-745) originating from the Tsarskoye Selo arsenal (1885-1886)
