Important knight's jewel of the Order of the Golden Fleece of the Spanish branch
Knight's jewel in chiseled gold and enamel. The relief figure of the ram, with its head turned to the right, is suspended from the emblems of Philip the Good, founder of the order: a flint striking a spark from which flames emerge, illustrating the order's motto "Ante Ferit Quam Flamma Micet" (it strikes before the flame shines). The royal blue enameled flint, bordered in white, with guilloché background and chiseled edges, features raised red enameled flames on a guilloché background highlighted with chiseled gold fillets on the obverse, while on the convex reverse, they are bordered by a grooved edge. The motif representing the flint, enameled royal blue and white with chiseled edges and highlighted with foliage and beads, features a significant raised composition on the obverse, simply engraved on the reverse, depicting a floral garland framed by two laurel branches. The acanthus leaf bale is topped with a transversal blue enameled ring bordered in white through which passes a long red ribbon tie accented with an openwork enameled gold loop decorated with fruited oak branches.
Minute chips on the white enamel of the fire stone on the obverse, partially faded ribbon

The Order of the Golden Fleece was founded in Bruges by Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, on January 10, 1430, his wedding day with Isabella of Portugal. Incarnation of chivalrous values and the splendor of the court of the Great Dukes of the West, it is one of the most prestigious court orders. Linked to the title of Duke of Burgundy, its grandmastership has been disputed between Austria and Spain since 1712, with each of the two sovereigns or house leaders continuing to confer it. After Philip, Duke of Anjou, grandson of Louis XIV, ascended the throne of Spain, France traditionally acknowledged only the Spanish branch.
