172
Important pendant jewel of the Order of Malta attributed to the goldsmith Giuseppe Bruno (1618-1682)
Round lobed gold medallion with raised enamel decorations. The convex front, bordered by a gold thread, is adorned in the center with a white Maltese cross on a dark blue background framed by a yellow thread bordered by a continuous and dotted red double stripe, surrounded by a garland of flowers with light gray petals and yellow pistils on a light green background. It is bordered by twenty-two lobes edged in gold: eleven large petal-shaped lobes decorated with various polychrome flowers on a white background, interspersed with eleven small light green enameled sepals with black veins. The concave back features a landscape with three haloed figures: the seated Virgin Mary looking at the Infant Jesus on her lap embracing a young John the Baptist dressed as a hermit, at their feet a lamb, behind three trees, on the side a river dominated by a fortified castle on a promontory, another in the distance. The large lobes, set in wide striped gold threads, each adorned with a bouquet of three flowers, polychrome tulips and anemones, the almost spherical sepals, enameled in light green, are adorned with black threads and dots. Three lobes on the front have small chips.
