Lisbon, May-October 1983, 17th European Exhibition of Art, Science, and Culture - Belem Tower. Catalog Os Descobrimentos Portugueses e a Europa do Renascimento. Armaria dos Seculos XV a XVII, 1983, no. 71, p. 77, illustrated p. 78.
Burgonet closed with a round stamp of "Savoyard" type, extended into a neck guard at the front and back. Two-part visor with the top part shaped into a visor with two arches above the eye openings of the lower part, pierced with a smile-shaped slit at mouth level. Chestplate with a slight central ridge, extended by a fauld of two plates held at the waist by pivoting pegs passing through hinges. By mistake, the fauld is attached under the base of the chestplate instead of over it. Long tassets-thigh defenses with ten plates each are hung from the fauld by buckles and straps, extended by articulated knee defenses with five plates, adorned on the front with a repoussé star motif emphasized by golden paint. Backplate at the bottom of which is attached a five-plate back defense, originally suspended by straps and buckles, replaced by a modern screw and wing nut. Pair of arms consisting of wide pauldrons with six plates adorned on the front and back with decorative brass rivets arranged in a circle, vambraces for the forearms and couters with wings. Gauntlets with six plates, missing fingers. The painted decoration, quite elaborate, on a thick black varnish, mainly consists of a succession of lobed medallions with interlaced leaf motifs, surrounded by corded bands and plant elements. Rope and cord motifs straight or interlaced structure the entire decoration, highlighting the edges and ridges of the pieces. On the visor, left black, striped gold bands particularly emphasize the human features of the burgonet.
The painted decoration seems to imitate here the luxury engraved and gilded cuirassier armors produced in the workshops of northern Italy, such as the beautiful piece preserved at the Wallace Collection probably made for a member of the House of Savoy (A63). On this piece, we find the same cord motifs as on the armor painting presented here, as well as the same colorful combination of repetitive gold motifs on a black background. In both cases, these corded motifs could thus be a reference to the cord of the Order of the Annunciade, of which the patron of the painted armor may have been a member. Although originally cheaper and less precious than their mercury-engraved and gilded counterparts, painted armors like this one have mostly lost their original colors and are extremely rare today.
Some damages to the paint, missing the gorget and finger plates.
