Decorative shield with the judgment of Paris, in repoussé iron forged in one piece. The main scene is inspired by the famous composition of Raphael, widely disseminated by the engraving of Marcantonio Raimondi, but the artist recomposed the space and moved the characters. Paris, who offers the golden apple to Venus, with a slightly different position from its model, is thus placed at the center, moving Minerva facing left. The ornamental frame, consisting of a couple of twisted base figures and children hanging on garlands of fruit, is taken from the border of Marcus Curtius' engraving by the Bellifontain artist Jean Mignon.
The armorer added a lion's head at the top and a horned chimera head at the bottom, which also seems to be inspired by French ornamental repertoire. The high-quality strong repoussé, now polished to white, was originally entirely covered with gold and silver damascening, now completely disappeared. Two series of four ribbed rivets held handles on the back, now gone, but these are later additions.
This piece can be related to a set of round shields and ornamental burgonets produced in the 1560s by the same Milanese workshop, whose author is only known by his initials, MP, inscribed on one of his works kept at the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg. Master MP, possibly the armor Matthew Piatti, has created another rondache on the theme of the judgment of Paris, following Raphael's composition more faithfully and keeping his associated burgonet, now on display at the Deutsches Historisches Museum in Berlin (inv. W 1005).
The overall surface was formerly corroded, worn by repolishing, metal pierced in several places, with minor accidents.
