Mughal dagger handle in jade with lion head pommel set with precious stones and gold
India, 17th century
Jade, gold, emeralds, rubies
Length 14 cm
1143 CH
€10,000/€12,000
Dagger handle with lion head pommel carved from a piece of cloudy gray jade.
The magnificence of the sculpture and the choice of jade demonstrate particular care: the milky gray section of the stone has been selected for the lion's face, which is delicately and beautifully sculpted with rounded features. The eyes are set with rubies in a gold setting, the head features prominent ears, and the mouth is open, showing teeth and a relief tongue. The lion's mane is finely sculpted and enhanced with gold inlays. The base is adorned with a floral motif inlaid with gilded foliage and flowers set with rubies and emeralds, in the kundan style with gold.
