Mughal thumb ring for archery, in white jade, set with rubies and diamonds in gold

On the front of the ring is a six-petal flower set with cabochon rubies and a central faceted diamond, two vines with leaves emerge from the setting, both with ruby and diamond buds. The back is set with a large cabochon ruby and two smaller flower-shaped rubies with two buds. The upper and lower edges of the ring have simple gold outlines. Four inclusions/cracks in the jade.
A related example was sold at Christie’s, Maharajas & Mughal Magnificence, New York, June 19, 2019, lot 15.

Mughal thumb ring for archery, set with gemstones and ornate gold

Typically shaped, made of pale green jade and set with gemstones mounted on metal leaf in the kundan style. The front features a large six-petal flower, while the back sports a four-petal flower, connected by twisting vines and buds. The upper and lower borders are simply decorated with gold lines, and the kundan leaves at the front are finely engraved.
A similar example was sold at Christie’s during the "Maharajas & Mughal Magnificence" auction in New York on June 19, 2019, lot 16.

Classically shaped, this archer's ring is set in the Kundan style with a large six-petal flower on the front with diamonds and a single ruby, four floral clusters on vines surround the side of the ring also set with diamonds. The back is adorned with a large ruby with edges and two diamonds.

Mughal thumb ring for archery, in carnelian and gold

The front face is carved with a large eight-petal flower connected by twisting vines and flowers with a similar six-petal flower at the back of the ring. The outer upper and lower edges are inlaid with a band of gold inserted into the jade every 2mm, a technique sometimes used on hard materials to ensure the gold stays in place.
A similar carnelian thumb ring for archers was sold at Christie’s during the “Maharajas & Mughal Magnificence” auction in New York on June 19, 2019, lot 25.

Thumb ring for archery in green hard stone of unknown origin

In milky green stone, in a classic shape, curving at the back to a point. The stone is highly polished and translucent, with mineral inclusions that sparkle and shine in the light.

Thumb ring for archery, steel decorated with gold

Made of steel, now patinated, embellished with golden koftgari with rows of quatrefoils on the upper and lower edges of the top part of the ring, with the underside adorned with a simple geometric band and a small sunburst inside the back of the ring.
Old Indian archer rings in steel are rare. However, there is another one bearing the name of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan (d.1666) currently in the Al-Sabah collection in Kuwait, see "Precious Indian Weapons and Other Princely Accoutrements", Salam Kaoukji, 2017, pages 366-367, cat.no.128.

Mughal thumb ring for archery, walrus ivory

Carved from a single piece of beautifully veined walrus ivory in an arched shape that dips at the front and back, with the lower back curving to a point. For a ring of similar shape, see "Precious Indian Weapons and Other Princely Accoutrements", Salam Kaoukji, Kuwait, 2017, page 410, cat.no.150.
