Provenance: This tumbler and a silver soup plate were taken as loot following the Battle of Waterloo on June 18, 1815, from the Emperor's sleeping carriage seized by the Prussian infantry regiment Bulon. They were immediately acquired by Major Gustave Björnstierna (Regensburg 1783-1840 Münster), commanding officer of the second battalion of said regiment. Of Swedish origin, he had served as an officer in the Prussian army during campaigns against Napoleon and had received several serious injuries. He held the following orders: Knight of the Iron Cross, Order of the Sword of Sweden, Order of Merit of Sweden, Order of Saint Anne of Russia... The tumbler and plate later passed to his brother Magnus, and then remained in the Bjönstierna family by descent. The family privately sold the tumbler at an unknown earlier date (around 1980). The soup plate was then auctioned at Bukowski in Stockholm on October 28, 1985.
Note: This tumbler was part of the exhibition "When Bonaparte Became Napoleon" in Wasquehal from January 31 to February 22, 2004. Exhibition curator Bernard Croissy 2004, p. 45, cat. 45, ill.
