Round bronze medal with a patina, diameter 3 cm, designed by Georges Lemaire. Obverse featuring the effigy of the Republic wearing a helmet and cuirass, head turned right, surrounded by the legend "RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE" (FRENCH REPUBLIC).
On the reverse, a cartouche bearing the inscription "AUX DÉFENSEURS DE LA PATRIE" (TO THE DEFENDERS OF THE FATHERLAND), above a trophy of arms, with the dates "1870 - 1871."
Lightly sun-faded light green silk ribbon with five black vertical stripes.
