SIGNED AUTOGRAPH LETTER FROM MARSHAL JEAN DE DIEU SOULT, Duke of Dalmatia, TO ART MERCHANT BUCHANAN IN LONDON, January 5, 1824. 18906-32
In this letter addressed to the London art merchant Buchanan, the Marshal displays a keen sense of business.
"I have the honor to reply, Sir, to the letter you wrote to me on December 29th, stating that the eleven paintings you took note of at my place, as well as the Etruscan vases you saw there, are still available, although several people have inquired about them. I am resolved not to sell them for less than f. 1375.00. I mean thirteen hundred and seventy-five thousand francs, payable in cash upon receiving the paintings and vases.
I must also inform you that it is likely I will raise the price if a decision to purchase is not made promptly, but at this time I will maintain the price I have indicated.
I have the honor to be, Sir, your very humble and obedient servant.
Paris, January 5, 1824.

P.S. I must also inform you that if the transaction is not concluded by the 1st of March next, I may be absent from Paris and the price would necessarily increase."
