A printed letter from Lieutenant-General Prince Maurice de Lichtenstein addressing the inhabitants of Auxerre:
"I find myself before your City with the imperial royal troops under my command. I cannot believe that you have conceived the foolish plan of wanting to put up useless resistance in a city devoid of all means of defense, and that you would expose yourselves to the inevitable ravages and misfortunes of an unnecessary attack [...]
I await your response in half an hour. I hope it will be guided by reason and the urgency of the circumstances [...].
