MOURNING SWORD FOR CIVIL OR MILITARY USE, reign of Louis XV, Ancient Monarchy, circa 1750-1767. 29064
Iron hilt without decoration. Crossguard with small rings. Shell guard with two valves. Finely grooved ebony handle with carved ferrules imitating a braided pattern. Plain oval pommel. Double-edged blade, length 71 cm, engraved on each side with military trophies and floral motifs, signed on one side at the tang "Jacques Spol marchd armourer at the Black Head in METZ".

Good condition, slightly shortened oxidized blade, without scabbard.
NOTE:
The old term "sergeant sword" coined by Bottet in 1910 should be revised based on the research by Mr. Chouinard from Montreal and validated by Michel Pétard as: Mourning Sword for Civil and Military Use, reign of Louis XV, Ancient Monarchy.
