Vendée Wars. SOUVENIR FRAME OF THE VENDÉE WARS, NANTES 13 DECEMBER 1793, Revolution. 13505
Five precious mementos that belonged to Françoise CARGADO, guillotined in Nantes in May 1794.
Displayed on the front of the frame:
- a handwritten letter, 18.2 cm x 15.5 cm:
"Nantes 13 December 1793, At this moment Mister de Charette is in Montaigu where you will go, as I know you will, and you will do what you must for our god, for our king, for our country.
I think of you, my friend, who will always have my faithful memory.
Françoise."
- a round iron medal engraved with "FRANCOISE CARGADO," diameter 3.2 cm; it is attached to a pink ribbon as a pendant.
- white silk forming a cockade, width 7 cm.
- sacred heart in scarlet cloth cut out and sewn on a white background; height of the white cloth 7 cm x 5 cm, height of the sacred heart 5.5 cm, width of the sacred heart 4.3 cm.
On the back of the frame, a pencil drawing depicting the portrait of Françoise CARGADO with the handwritten inscription "Do not be surprised, beloved and sweet object, if an evening of sadness darkens my face, while a skilled pen drew my face, I awaited the scaffold and I thought of you."
Signed "F." Nantes 10 May 1794."
Height at sight 21 cm x width at sight 15.5 cm.
The set is presented under glass in a modern frame, height 25.5 cm x 19.5 cm.
