OFFICER'S CUIRASSIER HELMET, model 1858, Second Empire. 30161

Helmet made of copper plated with silver, with a gutter at the base of the helmet typical of the 1858 model with a simple round rim. The depth of the helmet is approximately 10 cm from the base of the gutter. Turban made of sturdy leather covered with a band of original navy cowhide, H-shaped on the sides 6 cm. Lacing at the back with ten eyelets. Visor (width 5 cm) and neck guard in copper plated silver, both bordered by a folded copper rim along the outer edge, lined with black waxed leather.

Crest made of stamped and gilded brass, consisting of a mask (width 4.2 cm) stamped with a flaming bomb surmounted by a relief head of Medusa with a crown of laurel and oak branches above it, attached to the helmet with a gilded brass screw; two fins (max height 11.5 cm) embossed with a decreasing series of eight flutes framed by beads, acanthus leaves, and florets, and in the upper part with a series of laurel leaves; the bottom part is folded outward and decorated with acanthus leaves, each fin is attached to the helmet with four gilded brass screws; cover plate embossed with a decorative motif resembling a plaited mane. Crest ornament in brass consisting of an olive decorated with palmettes (height 3 cm), a socket with laurel branches (height 3 cm) and palmettes, the base of which is adorned with a small serrated disc, and a scarlet horsehair pompom (height 5.5 cm). Black horsehair crest measuring 60 cm. Gilded brass plume holder decorated with laurel branches, height 4.6 cm.

Chin scales from the 1845 model; mounted on an iron chin strap covered in black velvet, adorned with a sequence of 19 guilloche gilded brass intertwined figure-eight rings. The two widest rings are a single piece with a round rosette stamped with a radiant sun, the rosette is attached to the helmet with a guilloche gilded brass screw, rosette diameter 6 cm.

Interior lining made of black waxy sheepskin cut into nine sections.

Total height of the helmet 36 cm.

Scarlet cock feathers plume mounted on a whalebone stem ending with an iron spring. Apparent height of the feathers 20 cm, total height 26 cm.
