ARTILLERY SECOND LIEUTENANT'S KEPI, model 1873, Third Republic. 28523R
Entirely made of black cloth, 6 cm high at the front. Black cloth band, 3 cm high, with silver-gilt braided cords, one cord sewn horizontally above the band indicating the rank, one cord sewn vertically at the front, back, and on each side of the kepi, crown bordered with a cord and its center adorned with a gilt brass button stamped with an imitation of a cannetille. False chinstrap in silver-gilt braiding, half-spherical brass buttons stamped with two crossed cannons with cannonball. Round-shaped visor in black patent leather, lined with green waxed basane, bordered with a leather welt folded over the outer edge. Black interior cap with a black waxed leather band and black cloth.

NOTE:
The button placed at the center of the crown is a decorative feature that is found on schoolboy caps, less frequently on kepis of the Imperial Guard of the Second Empire, but very rarely on military headgear of the Third Republic.
