TROOP HELMET OF THE REPUBLICAN GUARD ON HORSEBACK OF PARIS, model from 1907, Third Republic. 28528R
Helmet entirely made of steel. It consists of a dome, a visor, and a neck cover all rimmed with a brass band folded over the outer edge, a headband, two chin straps, a crest, a mane of black horsehair, and a plume holder. All fittings are made of brass.
The dome, stamped in one piece, marked and stamped with the size "59", marked "38" and stamped "SIRAUDIN & HERSANT". It is pierced inside with 3 suction holes for ventilation.
Front headband in embossed brass depicting two laurel branches tied together by a ribbon to which is attached a Legion of Honor awarded to the City of Paris on October 9, 1900; in the center, above the branches, the arms of the City of Paris are depicted surmounted by a ribbon bearing the inscription "FLUCTUAT NEC MERGITUR".
Crest composed of two fins embossed with a decreasing series of gadroons surrounded by a beaded ribbon and separated by an acanthus leaf and a fleur-de-lis. Each fin is attached to the dome by two brass screws; face embossed with 4 horizontally striped ribbons separated by three smooth ribbons, at the bottom a palmette is embossed in relief and at the top a head of Medusa, also embossed in relief; the top of the crest is partially covered at the front by a "cover plate" depicting the hair of Medusa in relief.
Ornament of the crest composed of a brass olive embossed with foliage, a brass socket embossed with laurel leaves, and a scarlet horsehair plume with a scarlet braided wool olive at its base.
The chin straps are made up of two chin straps of strong cowhide covered in black waxed morocco leather, each covered with fifteen scallops in brass alternately festooned with two or three festoons and fastened to the leather. At the lower end, the last scale is rounded, and at the outer end the scale has two festoons embossed in one piece with a round rosette. The chin straps are attached to the dome by means of a lock and are connected to each other by a black varnished leather strap with brass buckles. Square section plume holder slightly tapering downwards.

Poor condition, oxidized metal parts, one of the chin straps is detached because the pin of the lock at the end is broken, original mane but the sole shortened and detached, missing linings for the visor and neck cover. Posterior plume.

In his book "Le musée de la Gendarmerie - 1871-1945," Editions SPE BARTHELEMY, the author Eric Dagnicourt, senior gendarme officer and museum curator at the time, specifies that this model of headband on which the coat of arms adorned with the arms of the City of Paris is reduced to surmount the Legion of Honor awarded to the city on October 9, 1900, was adopted at an unknown date but probably in 1907.
