Translation:
"Brest, August 9, 1810
Dear parents, father and mother, brothers and sisters, I send you all my best regards, I cannot explain why I receive no response from you, maybe the whole family is dead, because I can't get any news from you, or are you doing this on purpose? If I do not receive any reply from you to this letter, it will be my last. It has been two months since I wrote the first letter, and if you were to write to me, I should also receive a response. In my first letter, I asked you to send me some money. If you have already sent what I requested and what I wrote about sending, do not send me anymore, I asked for two carlins, and if you sent them following my first letter, then everything is in order. We were ordered to Spain, but we were given counter-orders to march to Brittany, we passed through Brittany to Brest-sur-Mer, and we have a lot of duty on sea and land. It's a very bad country, we have to pay six sous for a pound of bread. We still do not know how long we will stay here, but we will stay a while longer. Since I wrote my first letter, we have advanced 120 hours on foot. We are housed in the barracks of Brest.
Signed: Diebold."
He then gives his address: "To Mister Diobot, soldier in the 95th line regiment, 4th battalion, 1st company, 1st division stationed in Brest in Brittany, 2nd half-brigade."
