ILLUSTRATED LETTER FROM CORPORAL MATHIEU LEMAIRE TO HIS MOTHER, Ambleteuse on the 25th Thermidor in the first year of the Empire. 18880-23
Watercolor illustration of a soldier in uniform, with hat and saber, holding a bouquet of flowers in his right hand, a delicate gesture for his mother's holiday.
"Ambleteuse on the 25th Thermidor in the first year of the Empire
My mother,
I take pen to paper to write these lines to you. I could not write them earlier as I was not in camp. It has been 1 month since I embarked, but we spent 27 days at anchor. It has been 2 days since I entered the port. I have been nothing more eager than to write these lines to you upon my arrival in the port.
My mother, I ask you to accept this flower for your holiday, this memorable and sincere day that only comes once a year. I present it to you in writing, not verbally, as I am unable to. My mother, please accept it as if it were me presenting it to you in person. I will not write more this time, as I hope to visit you soon. They are suggesting that permissions will be granted shortly. I send my greetings and I will always be your son.
Mathieu Lemaire, Corporal."
"I inform you as news that the entire troop will depart for Boulogne on the 25th. It is said to be to crown the emperor. There will be at least 40,000 men. Many regards to my father, your husband. Please give my family and my little girl my regards. Kindly convey my regards to my father and mother, brother and sister, and to all the family on both sides of my father. Greetings and friendship."
