Letter from soldier J. Cordedu (?), "corporal in the 25th line regiment, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Company in Lille, in Flanders, Nord department" to his parents.
First page illustrated in gouache of the soldier in uniform, with a bundle of flags, bayonets, and fasces, the republic holding the French flag, and "LILLE / JANUARY 2 / 1849" written.
"My dear father and mother,
You ask me for my portrait. I am sending it to you. Show it to all my sisters and my brother. Frame it in the kitchen where everyone can see it well.
I am sending back my (fly?) from when I was in the "grenadier" and now that I no longer have it. Please let me know immediately if you have received it. This is the New Year's gift that I am sending you. Please tell me in which regiment Jean Labre is.
My address is corporal in the 25th line regiment, 2nd battalion, 2nd company in Lille, Flanders, Nord department."
