COLORED ILLUSTRATED LETTER FROM MARÉCHAL DES LOGIS JEAN DUBOIS, 2nd Squadron of the 14th Regiment of Chasseurs à Cheval, on April 29, 1809 from Eckmülle, TO HIS PARENTS residing in Versailles. 18880-9
Superb colored vignette depicting a horse chasseur from the Light Cavalry of General Marulaz.
Letter addressed to "Monsieur Emile DUBOIS, employee at the Mare of Versailles near Paris".
"… I have just arrived at my new regiment, the 14th Chasseurs à Cheval, and we have entered the Austrian territory. I have found a good comrade in Maréchal des Logis DUEZ, and we have just lost our Colonel, Mr. SACHS*, but we lack nothing except for cartridges for our carbines at times. We are currently near Eckmülle and so far, nothing has happened to me, but I am very annoyed at not having enough cartridges [...] I am well fed, even though we are always on campaign, on guard duty, on escort duty, and with gunshots ringing all around, but the chasseurs à cheval are sturdy riders who are not afraid. Please do not send me anything, my dear parents, because we receive our pay and have almost no opportunity to spend it. I would not want you to deprive yourselves for me, as I lack nothing. Furthermore, we have very good horses, better than the hussars, and I prefer my new uniform, which is less ornate but more striking [...] Sending you warm embraces, my dear and kind parents, not forgetting my regards to Miss Marie. Your loving son. Signed Jean Dubois, Maréchal des Logis in the 2nd Squadron of the 14th Chasseurs à Cheval Regiment of the German army."
