Document Description : Title: "Procedure for prosecuting a captured deserter, with attached model" , date: April 18, 1716. 18902-23
A very interesting manuscript document dated 1716, outlining on the first three pages the procedure to be followed "to prosecute a deserter." The following pages contain a detailed account of the trial of two deserters, and on the last page, the sentence is recorded as follows:
"...For reparation of which we condemn them in accordance with the orders of the King to have their noses and ears cut off, and to be marked with a fleur-de-lis on each cheek by the executioner of high justice in the public square of this city, in the presence and at the head of the assembled regiment, and then both to be led in chains to serve as convicts in the King's galleys for life.
Done and given at St. Quentin in our residence on the twenty-second of April, one thousand seven hundred and sixteen."
Seven signatures are appended at the end of the document.
