STAFF OFFICER SWORD, model of the 1st vendémiaire An XII (24 September 1803), First Empire. 29288
Gilt bronze hilt, molded guard decorated with foliage and lion heads; central guard decorated with an antique helmet surrounded by flags; pommel shaped like a plumed helmet. Straight quillon decorated with oak and laurel leaves, and a spiderweb motif at the base. Wooden grip entirely silver wire-wrapped. Double-edged blade with a central ridge, engraved with a radiant sun, a trophy of arms, and floral decorations, signed at the heel "I.S.B.", length 82 cm. Black varnished leather scabbard with two gilt brass fittings decorated with lines, chape with a button for hanging on the belt.

Good condition, hilt retaining much of its gilt, blade with oxidation, leather scabbard with some chipping and a fold in the middle, fittings partly ungilt.
NOTE:
The counter-guard on this sword is of reduced width to facilitate wearing on the belt.
