Maltese cross with four double-pointed rays ending in non-buttoned enamelled tips, center of the branches in gold and bordered with white enamel, four enamelled and burnished fleurs-de-lis between the branches, oblong centers. The obverse features a crowned and golden-armored Saint Louis covered by a blue mantle lined with black ermine, holding the Crown of Thorns of the Passion in his right hand and a laurel wreath in his left hand, standing on a green terrain on a red enamel background, with a royal blue strip carrying the legend "LUD. M. INS 1693" for Ludovicus Magnus Instituit 1693 (Louis the Great established it in 1693). The reverse shows a sword in pale passing between two laurel branches forming a wreath, connected by a white ribbon on a red enamel background, bordered by a royal blue strip with the legend "BELL. E VIRTUTIS. PRAEM." for Bellicae virtutis praemium (reward for military virtue), ribbed ring.
