MEDAL OF THE SIEGE OF ROME OF 1849, created in 1850, Papal States, Second Empire. 29902
Made of patinated bronze, round-shaped, Italian manufacture signed "NC", Nicola Cerbara, diameter 3.2 cm. On the obverse, a papal tiara placed on two crossed keys within a laurel wreath, bordered by the inscription "SEDES APOSTOLICA ROMANA," Roman Apostolic See. On the reverse, it bears the inscription "PIVS IX PONT.MAX. / ROMAE RESTITUTUS / CATHOLICIS / ARMIS / COLLATIS / AN. MDCCCXLIX," Pius IX pontiff brought back to Rome by the uniting of the Catholic armies in the year 1849. Ribbon made of papal cloth in yellow with two wide vertical white stripes. Fixed suspension ring.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:
Created by Pope Pius IX in memory of the siege of Rome by French troops who came to the Pope's rescue after he had been driven from his capital by Garibaldi's troops. This medal was awarded to the soldiers who took part in the expeditionary force led by General Oudinot in 1849.
