GUARD OF THE KING'S BODY UNIFORM, model 1820: UNIFORM, HELMET, CARTRIDGE BOX, Second Restoration. 29805
HELMET:
Straight bombshell composed of two shells adjusted and soldered in tin-plated silvered copper, pierced with four ventilation holes, bomb base protruding to form a gutter. Bomb height approximately 9.5 cm.
Front plate in embossed and gilded brass (matt and polished), height approximately 19 cm, width approximately 26 cm, attached to the bomb by six gold-headed screws, embossed with a radiant sun, with the so-called "architectural" design emerging from a cloud where a ribbon struck with the motto "NEC PLURIBUS IMPAR" (Superior to all - Louis XIV's motto) is placed, in the center is a brass motif of the sun's face attached, height 4.3 cm, width 4.3 cm. Turban in strong leather covered with black-dyed calfskin, height 7.5 cm.
Visor 6.5 cm wide and neck guard approximately 5 cm in tinned sheet covered with black-dyed calfskin and brass hoop folded over the outer edge.
Gold-plated brass chinstraps consisting of a chin strap in soft leather covered with black silk velvet (width 3.9 cm), covered with two chains made of intertwined chiseled rings (diameter of rings 2 cm); an oval rosette embossed with a lion's head (H 5 cm, width 4.7 cm).
Gold-plated brass plumet holder of tubular shape with slightly decreasing square section towards the bottom (H 4.9 cm).
Copper-plated silver cimier (H 11.5 cm). The mask (width 4.5 cm) and the two flukes are embossed in relief with a row of feathers with a row of fleur-de-lis at the base. Black horsehair mane mounted on a core with metal wire.
First type inner liner composed of a black leather band with upper part missing.
Good condition, lower part of the plate is cracked under the sun's face, some missing parts on the turban and visor, missing the fabric part of the inner liner.
COAT:
Coat in "royal blue" wool (dark blue) entirely trimmed in scarlet, buttoning straight at the front with eight buttonholes adorned with eight buttons, diameter 2.5 cm, embossed in silver metal mounted on bone. On each side of these buttonholes, eight silver-patterned trimmings of the King's Body Guards are sewn and finished at their outer ends by silver floches with fine twists, trimming width 4 cm.
Scarlet wool collar, height 7.5 cm, adorned at the front on each side with a double silver trim of the King's Body Guards model, each trim width 3.5 cm. Each trim is finished with a cascading floche identical to the coat.
Straight-cut scarlet wool sleeve facings, height 8 cm, similarly trimmed with trims and floches as the collar. Above the facings, a small uniform button allows the sleeve to be adjusted.
At the back of the coat, the waist knot is adorned with two large uniform buttons.
Long tails with scarlet reverses, the four lower corners are embellished with ornaments. On the outside, a fleur-de-lis embroidered in silver threads and sequins (H 4 cm, width 3.5 cm) on scarlet wool. On the inside, the sun's face on a radiant background in silver metal, the background embroidered in silver threads and cannetilles and sequins (diameter 4 cm). Vertical false pockets with three points, each adorned with three silver trims with large uniform button and floche (trim width 3.5 cm).
Inner lining in blue wool and ecru canvas.
On each shoulder, a silver trim shoulder strap mounted on blue wool (width 1 cm).
Very good preservation condition, trims and passementeries with oxidation from use, collar slightly sun-faded with some moth holes in the rear.
CARTRIDGE BOX:
Bandolier in colors of the Gramont company. Made of waxed burgundy leather covered with a wide silver trim (width 6.8 cm) with a green silk thread cartridge identifying the Gramont company. Gilt brass fittings representing a royal crown connected to the sun's face on a radiant sun with three chains and pins. Adjusting buckle in silver metal.
Wooden box covered in black varnished leather with silver-plated brass flanks, in which six compartments are made to hold the cartridges. At the top of the two flanks, a ring allows the bandolier to be attached for horse service. Box height 10 cm, width 16 cm, depth approximately 3 cm.
Black varnished leather shoulder piece cut in a bracket shape, height 12 cm, 18 cm wide at the bottom, 15.5 cm wide at the top. The shoulder piece is edged with a silver-plated copper decorated strip. In the center, a silver-toned copper motif representing the sun's face on a radiant background is affixed. Motif height 6.5 cm x width 7.8 cm. At the bottom, at the back of the shoulder piece, a black varnished leather strap is sewn.
Very good condition, bandolier trim with oxidation from use, strap at the back of the shoulder piece broken in two but present.
PROVENANCE: Former collection of Colonel Denis, sold at Maître Denis Ballot on May 29, 1994 in St Étienne, lot numbers 208 and 209 from the catalog.
