OFFICER'S SABER OF THE CHASSEURS DE VINCENNES, model 1838, later became Chasseurs d'Orléans in 1842, during the Second Empire. Inventory number 29250R.

Brass hilt with a single branch, protruding pommel, and openwork shell with foliage motifs. Cap with a long tail decorated with laurel branches. Filigree brass horn grip. Blade with hollow edges and rounded spine, length 81.2 cm, spine marked "Manufre Natle de Klingenthal Coulaux Aîné & Cie." Blade heel stamped with a "D" under a crown and a "B" under a crown within an oval, indicating the officer's blade stamps as a commercial practice of the Coulaux company in Klingenthal. Natural buffalo hide knot. Steel scabbard with two sling rings.

Subaltern officer's sword knot for undress uniform, made of black silk cord, with a tassel and fringes in gold braid.

Condition: The saber is in good condition with oxidation on the blade and scabbard, produced during the Second Republic with modifications made to the scabbard during the Second Empire.

HISTORY:
The Chasseurs de Vincennes were an experimental unit created in 1837, later renamed Chasseurs d'Orléans in 1842.
August 21, 1837: Establishment of the Provisional Company of Chasseurs à Pied (54th Infantry Regiment) - The Duke of Orléans establishes the "experimental chasseur company" at the Vincennes camp under the organization of General Houdetot, the King's aide-de-camp.
November 14, 1838: Creation of the "Provisional Battalion of Chasseurs à Pied" comprising 6 companies by the Duke of Orléans.
August 1839: The provisional battalion becomes the "Battalion of Riflemen."
September 28, 1840: Official establishment of the "1st Battalion of Chasseurs à Pied" under the command of Major Ladmirault.
July 19, 1842: The 1st Battalion of Chasseurs à Pied is renamed "1st Battalion of Chasseurs d'Orléans" following the death of the Duke of Orléans.
March 7, 1848: The "1st Battalion of Chasseurs à Pied" takes back its original name.
1870: It is reconstituted as the "1st March Battalion of Chasseurs à Pied."
August 21, 1940: The battalion is incorporated into the ranks of the armistice army.
December 1, 1942: Dissolution of the battalion.
