Round patinated bronze medal, diameter 30 mm, engraved by Georges Lemaire. Obverse featuring the effigy of the helmeted and armored Republic, head facing right, surrounded by the legend "RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE."
Reverse, cartridge bearing the inscription "TO THE DEFENDERS OF THE HOMELAND," above a trophy of arms, with the dates "1870 - 1871."
Light green silk ribbon with five thin vertical black stripes, slightly sun-faded. Silver metal clasp "VOLUNTARY ENGAGED."
