MILITARY MEDAL, created on January 22, 1852, 7th type, Third Republic. 27187-2
On the obverse, within a laurel wreath, a circle of blue enamel with the inscription "RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE - 1870" and a profile portrait of the Republic; on the reverse, the motto "VALEUR ET DISCIPLINE."
The medal is topped with a trophy of arms symbolizing the land and sea armies of the French army.
The back of the trophy is flat, without the breastplate, connected to the medal by a ring.
Yellow ribbon framed by a green stripe.

HISTORY:
Created by Louis Napoléon, President of the Second Republic, to reward the exploits of non-commissioned officers and soldiers and thus compensate for the limited promotions these personnel received in the Order of the Legion of Honor, it also exceptionally rewards the Marshals and General Officers who have commanded in chief.
