HISTORY:
In 1850, the regiment was stationed in Belfort.
By decree of May 2, 1859, the 7th infantry regiment provided 1 company to form the 102nd line infantry regiment.
The regiment took part in the Mexican expedition in the 1st brigade (General Brincourt) within the 2nd infantry division (General de Castagny) and was stationed in the state of Durango until November 13, 1866. Passing through Queretaro, the regiment reached Mexico (January 15, 1867 - February 5, 1867). It covered the rear of the French retreat and was one of the last units to embark (some on the Castiglione, some on the Souverain).
In 1869, it was stationed in Paris. After the war of 1870, it was in Lyon and then in Cahors.

1870 to 1914
On the night of September 9-10, 1870, while the unit was trapped in Metz, the Prussians attempted, at 3 a.m., a surprise attack on the "Bellecroix farm" and drove out the 7th line infantry grand guard. The 1st battalion of the 71st, guarding in front of Vantoux, had a company (the 4th company) that was connected to the 7th line infantry. This company then decisively advanced on the trenches that the enemy had just taken, and with its fire, forced the Prussians into a hasty retreat.
On November 24, 1870, during the Franco-Prussian War, the 8th companies of the 2nd and 3rd battalions of the 7th line infantry regiment that made up the 29th march regiment were engaged in the battles of Chilleurs, Ladon, Boiscommun, Neuville-aux-Bois, and Maizières in the Loiret.
On March 27, 1871, elements of the regiment returning from captivity were amalgamated with elements from various units to form the 1st provisional infantry regiment.
