BIOGRAPHY:
Emmanuel Frémiet, a French sculptor born in Montrouge on December 6, 1824, and died in Paris on September 10, 1910.
Some of his most famous works include the Gorilla Carrying off a Woman (1887) now in Nantes, St. Michael Slaying the Dragon (1897) at Mont Saint-Michel, Joan of Arc (1874) in Paris, the Monument to Ferdinand de Lesseps (1899) in Port Said now in Port Fouad, Du Guesclin (1902) in Dinan, the Elephant Caught in a Trap (1878) now in front of the Musée d'Orsay, and his numerous animal subjects.
In addition to his monumental works commissioned by the State, he was recognized as an excellent realist animal sculptor. Emmanuel Frémiet particularly devoted himself to equestrian statues. The nephew of the sculptor Rude, he was the father-in-law of the musician Gabriel Fauré.
Upon the rise to power of Prince-President Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte in 1848, Frémiet dedicated himself to reverent works, starting with the prince's bassets, Ravageot and Ravageole (1848), which he exhibited at the Salon in 1853, opening the door to official commissions. That same year, he received a commission for a series of military subject statuettes for Emperor Napoleon III, executed meticulously from 1855 to 1859. He created the Monument to Napoleon I in 1868 and that of Louis d'Orléans in 1869 to adorn the imperial Château de Pierrefonds.
He lived at 43 Boulevard de Beauséjour (16th arrondissement of Paris). He passed away at his residence in the same district on September 10, 1910, and was buried in the Passy Cemetery (15th division). Gabriel Fauré rests beside him from 1924.
