Bonaparte, First Consul of the Republic, after what he was told about the distinguished conduct and the outstanding bravery of citizen Maréchal, fusilier 96th ½ line brigade in the battle of Marengo where this brave soldier, although wounded, went on fighting dauntlessly, until other wounds forced him out of the battlefield, awarded him an honour rifle as a national reward.
