Marius CLARY writes to his uncle Nicolas CLARY on February 1, 1812: he requests permission to remain at his post in the service of King Joseph*.
"… I do not wish to distress the Queen with a letter from me in these sad circumstances, but I come to ask you, my dear uncle, in consideration of the interest you have in me, to please explain to her my situation and urge her to intervene with the Prince to promptly obtain the permission I am seeking to stay with the King*. I also hope that she will have deigned to speak to Count Lacépède to authorize me to wear the decorations of Naples and Spain.
I will also ask you to convey my sincere regrets and respectful affection to our dear Queen and all my beloved aunts…".
