Spanish Campaign. LETTER FROM NICOLAS DE LOVERDO TO MARSHAL MASSÉNA, Valladolid 29 November 1812. 18906-4
Nicolas de Loverdo is requesting his departure from Spain, where he has been suffering physically and mentally for two years.
"Your Excellency,
Here is the third year that I spend St. Andrew's Day in Spain. It is not the best way to celebrate a day of true celebration for me. I can only gather my officers and have them drink a few bottles of Bordeaux wine to your health. Couldn't this blessed Saint, to whom I am very devoted, perform a little miracle in my favor? I ask no other grace than to be extracted from a country where I suffer physically and mentally.
I believe I have paid my debt enough with a stay of over two years in Spain, and as I have no intention of building castles here, I would like to be thrown elsewhere.
Rescue one of your most faithful from the captivity of Babylon.
Please accept, my Prince, my wishes for your well-being and happiness, as well as the tribute of my deep respect and unwavering devotion.
Valladolid, 19 November 1812.
Your devoted,"
Signed: N. Lorendo
