"Vilnius, December 4, 1812"
"Mr. Ambassador, I hasten to transmit to you an important news from the army. The Russian army from Moldavia commanded by Admiral Tchitchagoff and the Army commanded by General Wittgenstein, having joined forces on the Berezina near Borisov, were defeated on the 28th of November by the great French army, which captured 9 to 10 thousand prisoners, twelve cannons, and eight flags or standards from them. Mr. de Montesquiou, aide-de-camp to Prince Berthier* and son of the Grand Chamberlain of France, has just passed through Vilnius on his way to Paris with all speed. Emperor Napoleon was in very good health. Please have this news published in the newspapers.
Accept, Mr. Ambassador, the assurance of my highest consideration."
