Conscription. MILITARY NICKNAMES IN FRANCE IN THE 18th CENTURY, by Robert DAUVERGNE, 1948. 18902-4
At the same time as the conscript shed his civilian clothes, he also lost the name by which he was known. He was given a "war name" to which he must now respond.
Many nicknames are derived from the family name, or named after their province or city, some names recall moral qualities, others are taken from antiquity or history, from the names of flowers, some nicknames are based on external qualities, flaws, or tendencies.
