Chouannerie - Emigration. Regiment of Royal Emigrants. LETTER FROM COQUET LIEUTENANT, to generals George and La Vendée in Morbihan, Southampton, 9 March 1796. 18913-33
Addressed to "Generals Georges and La Vendée in Morbihan".
Southampton, 9 March 1796.
A survivor of the Quiberon affair, the officer was displeased to learn upon his return to the regiment that he was believed to have participated in the alleged embezzlement of sixty thousand pounds from the Chouans' fund, at the time when the army left Quentin...
He asks the generals to dispel this slander by writing to Count de La Châtre, and points out: "I have never been a part of the army headquarters, therefore never in charge of accounting..."
"I have the utmost confidence in your justice, sirs, and in this expectation I have the honor to be with deepest respect."
"Signed: de Coquet, lieutenant in the regiment of Royal Emigrants."
This letter was intercepted and countersigned on the back by the commissioners tasked with examining the correspondences of the émigrés.
