Émigrés. LETTER FROM THE COUNTESS Widow AIMÉE GOUIN DU FIEF TO THE COMMISSION OF FRENCH ÉMIGRÉS, Paris August 24, 1816. 18913-23
The Countess appeals to the members of the Commission of French Émigrés for a pension as a ruined Émigré.
"Paris, this 24 August 1816
The Countess Wd Gouin du Fief (Aimée) to the Gentlemen members of the Commission of French Émigrés.
Gentlemen,
The Countess Wd Gouin du Fief has the honor to explain to you that she lost all her fortune in the Vendée Wars to follow with her husband the legitimate cause of the august family of the Bourbons, for which she has continued to fight with the Brave Royalists until their dispersion; that she possesses in the world no other support than a pension of fifteen hundred francs, which HM Louis XVIII deigns to grant her from his own funds, as a token of gratitude for her services; that at the age of sixty-five, she has a very fragile health and numerous infirmities, caused by her advanced age and the hardships of the Vendée, which make it impossible for her to survive on such a modest sum, being unable to manage without a maid, she therefore believes, Gentlemen, that she is strongly entitled to claim from Justice and your kindness a pension as a ruined Émigré, asking you to kindly note that during the happy events of 1814 she received in England eleven Louis per month [...]
Your very humble and obedient servant, Wd Gouin Du Fief."
