Absolute leave granted to René BERNARD on June 15, 1802, in Malta, as a reward for his services. René BERNARD served for 7 years in the Roll Regiment, lost his right eye, and received a wound. He is granted a sum equivalent to a lifelong pension.
On the back of this certificate, is the signed receipt of Corporal René BERNARD declaring, "I have received all my clothing, my pay, and everything due to me from the day of my enlistment to the day of my absolute leave. I also acknowledge having received the sum of seventy-five pounds sterling in equivalent to a lifelong pension of seven pounds sterling per year as a reward for my services.

*The Roll's Regiment was a regiment of the British Army formed by Swiss, French, and German soldiers raised in 1794 to serve in the wars of the French Revolution. The first colonel of the regiment was Louis de Roll, a former officer of the pre-revolutionary French Swiss Guards.
