"Your letter of April 12, Mr. Marshal, has only reached me a few days ago; the Emperor, who lavishes us every day with marks of his benevolence and generosity, did not see fit for me to receive in the Corps, any other gentlemen than those who were there in August last [...] we must let events unfold a bit; nothing is more false than all the slanderous rumors that have spread in Germany about us; the Emperor is strictly just, and he is right, therefore only bad individuals could find fault in living under his rule; all honorable people [...] have found here a honorable refuge [...] I will never forget what we owe to Paul I. It is always a great pleasure, which I take, Mr. Marshal, at every opportunity, to renew to you the assurances of esteem and [...]”
